Having a layover can be a great chance to explore a new city while you're waiting for your next flight. Figuring out how to make the most of that extra time can be a bit of a puzzle. It truly depends on how much time you've got between your flights. We've assembled some suggestions based on how far away places are from O’Hare Airport and how long it usually takes to get there and back.
If you do decide to venture out of the airport, aim to return at least an hour or two before your next flight so you have enough time to go through security and reach your gate. This will also come in handy if you encounter any delays on your way back to the airport.
Check out our guide about the ORD airport to learn more about what the airport has to offer. Some of the highlights of O'Hare Airport include a wide variety of dining options, from fast food to sit-down restaurants, as well as shops where you can pick up last-minute souvenirs or essentials. The airport also offers free Wi-Fi, charging stations for your devices, and even a yoga room for those looking to relax before their flight.
Be sure to check out the airport's art installations and exhibits, which showcase local artists and add a touch of culture to your travel experience. And if you have some time to spare, consider taking a walk around the airport to stretch your legs and explore all that O'Hare has to offer.
It takes at least an hour to get from O'hare Airport to downtown Chicago. If you have enough time, you can see the city's famous landmarks like Millennium Park, the Art Institute of Chicago, or even take a stroll along the Magnificent Mile for some shopping.
We don’t recommend going downtown unless your layover is at least 6 hours. You can take the Blue Line downtown, which is connected to terminals 1, 2, and 3, and goes straight to the Loop. The L is $2.50 for one-way trips; you can buy tickets either using the Ventra App or buying a ticket at a terminal at the station. The L runs every 10-20 minutes, depending on the time of day.
No one wants to drag heavy luggage around downtown Chicago. If you checked your bags and stayed on one airline, your bags will usually be sent to your next flight. You can also use companies like Stasher LuggageHero, or Nannybag, to store your luggage. These services have convenient locations near airports or popular tourist areas. Remember to pack any essentials like chargers, snacks, and entertainment in your carry-on bag.
Remember to keep an eye on the time and give yourself enough buffer to make it back to the airport for your connecting flight. It's always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to travel. Happy Travels!
